Utah to Colorado to New Mexico

We are still in Utah, but less than 20 miles from Colorado and less than 100 miles from New Mexico. We were only on the interstate a few miles today because we jumped over to US 6 and went through Price Canyon (beautiful!) then over to US 191 through Moab and the Canyonlands (awesome!). The roads were great, some two lanes but mostly four lanes, and the sights were much better than what you see from the interstate!

Idaho to Utah

We meant to make it to Ogden, Utah today but decided to take a break instead. We are in Twin Falls, Idaho tonight.

Washington to Oregon

Today we drove 450 miles, from Issaquah, Washington, to Ontario, Oregon. We didn't mean to drive so far, but there was no place to stop between Pendleton and Ontario and we had already called ahead for a reservation at Ontario.

Aunt Jeanne and Marianne are driving from Port Townsend, Washington, to Moriarty, New Mexico, because Aunt Jeanne is moving to New Mexico!

Today, we left Port Townsend, Washington, about 4:00 PM and stopped at Issaquah for the night about 7:30 PM. We came across Puget Sound on the Kingston-Edmonds Ferry.

Mom left us on Thursday, August 23, 2007, about 3 in the morning. John called and Billy and Annie flew down on Friday. John decided to have Mom's memorial service on the beach, even if it was just us three. Of her friends, we only knew Sharon and Joe. We called to let them know.

It was still dark when we walked over to the beach, we three, and sat on the bench together to wait. Pretty soon, Sharon came with Mom's swimsuit on a little stand and shells that Mom collected and orange juice and muffins. We walked down to the water and waited. As the light started coming up, people came walking on the beach to us. Soon, there were about 10 of us and Joe started talking. Then several other people spoke. It was good to hear them.

Mike started taking some pictures and then he called for us to turn around and look. From the west, there were rays of light coming up from the ground to the zenith of the sky, arranged like a fan in alternating colors.

Then most of us went in the water, even me in all my clothes, not having thought to wear my swimsuit.

It was the most wonderful memorial I have ever seen.

Well--ole Mr Wonderful is down again. Feet broke down again and havem't been able to go to work since last Friday. Going to see a supposed "specialist" on Friday to see if they have come up with anything new.

Power just came back on last night, what a drag that was. Everyone is OK. Some minor damage to car and some roof damage to our building , but could have been a lot worse.
Pompano looks like a war zone, less than half the place has power and the water was out for a week (lots of fun). Only about 10 percent of the traffic lights work so a 20 minute ride to work takes on hour. Mom is OK , but still no power.

Florida cleans up after deadly hurricane

FLORIDIANS lined up for water, gas, ice and generators yesterday outside the few stores that were open after Hurricane Wilma cut a costly, deadly swath across the peninsula.

The storm slammed across the state in about seven hours Monday, causing billions in insured damage and leaving 5.9 million people, or a little less than three million homes and businesses, without electricity. More than 5,000 residents remained in shelters yesterday as the hurricane's remnants headed toward the North Atlantic.

Wilma was blamed for at least five deaths in Florida.

Before smashing into Florida, Wilma killed at least six people in Mexico and 13 others in Jamaica and Haiti.

The storm also devastated resort towns along Mexico's Caribbean coast, severely flooding the tourist hotspot Cancun, where looters ransacked entire blocks of stores. Thousands of tourists remained stranded along the resort-studded Yucatan coast.

In Cuba, the storm flooded Havana's streets and ripped off chunks of the famous Malecon seawall.

Although the hurricane's remnants were far out to sea yesterday, they contributed moisture to a storm known as a nor'easter that was blowing through the US north-east, knocking out power to thousands of people and hammering New Jersey beaches with six-metre waves.

The National Weather Service posted coastal flood warnings across the north-east, where many residents were still cleaning up from flooding earlier in the month.

Officials of Florida's three most populous areas Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties prepared to distribute ice, water and other essentials to residents yesterday, while utilities warned that restoration of services could stretch into weeks.

"It will be days or weeks before we are back to normal," Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez said.

In Florida, most stores remained closed because of the widespread power outages, creating long lines at those that were open. More than 500 people queued up outside a Broward County Super Wal-Mart, which was letting in about 20 people at a time.

The first person in line, Joyce Carr, had been waiting several hours in hopes of buying a generator only to learn the store was out. But she still wanted to buy a grill, charcoal and water.

"We've heard different reports that the power will be out for some time so we're worried about supplies for our family," Ms Carr said.

Governor Jeb Bush thanked emergency workers for their efforts.

His brother, President George Bush, signed a disaster declaration Monday and promised swift help. He plans to travel to Florida on Thursday.

Miami-Dade and Broward authorities reported few problems despite the loss of power. Fourteen people were arrested for violating a curfew in Miami-Dade, where fewer than 10 looting arrests were made. Broward had six reports of looting.

Wilma, the eighth hurricane to strike or pass by Florida in 15 months, landed on Florida's Gulf coast as a Category 3 hurricane, littering the landscape with power lines, wrecked signs, torn awnings and other debris.

Trees and roofs dotted expressways, and all three of South Florida's major airports Miami International, Fort Lauderdale-

Hollywood and Palm Beach were closed. Miami's airport might not reopen until today, spokesperson Marc Henderson said.

"Miami is a major point, and this is a major disruption," said a spokesperson for American Airlines, which has a major hub in Miami.

John reports that Hurricane Wilma is on the way. Winds reached 35 mph as of this hour. The news reports that they may reach 110 mph. John is not worried as he has a bathtub full of fresh water as well as vodka and wine, also olives. And a flashlight and candles. That's the report from Pompano Beach. He is supposed to write later.

Billy in Hospital

Billy was in the hospital in September. His pacemaker/defibrillator kept going off. He thought there might be something wrong with it. Then the doctors thought there might be something wrong with his heart (something more than there already is). But it turned out that he needed a different medication to help with the arrythmias that were setting it off. Because his heart is holding up just fine! He should have posted this himself but he lost his password. So I'm doing his post for him and he can post a comment. You all know you can post a comment without a password, don't you? Just say you are "other" instead of using your blogger account. Just until you get your password updated of course.

Another blogger in the family. Hooray! I also blog on my website at www.mariannepowers.com. That's where I've published my book on the web.

We are all doing well out here in New Mexico. Gator gets around much better since his last operation. He takes the dogs for a walk every day and supervises our friend Jimmy working in the yard and the house. He replaced most of our carpet with tile and now we smell good! Marianne is Director of Health Information Services at Mesa Mental Health and does a little consulting on the side. She is active in Toastmasters and is learning about the web -- website, blog, and now an RSS feed!
